Visiting my mentee

I went over my mentee's house last night, and it was a ton of fun. At first I thought it was going to be a little awkward, as I tend to be shy, especially when over a new person's house, but it was actually very nice. Shannon was so excited that I came over and while waiting for my arrival drew me a picture that I have hanging in my room right now :)

I really enjoyed talking to her parents and getting to know them. It was odd to realize that her father was so similar to my own, and, oddly enough, many of my friends as well, as he is very interested in computers and even showed me the one he built himself. Her mother is the president of the parent teacher organization at the Poultney elementary school as well as a girl scout leader. I found out that Shannon came up with the idea to ask people to either donate money or cookies to the Rutland Women's Shelter when they were selling cookies the other week, and the troop managed to raise enough money to donate four large crates of them for the cause! Quite amazing. I also had a conversation with her parents about what their lives were like back in college, and our discussions made me better understanding why Shannon acts so much more mature than her age. She is an only child, so she's rather independent, but her parents are also very open to discussing big issues with her if she asks. After dinner, we played a game called "apples to apples" which, if you've never played it, you should definitely go check it out asap, as it's HILARIOUS. Essentially there is a "judge" who takes a green apple card that has an adjective on it. Everyone else playing looks at their red apple cards (which have nouns) and give the judge one of the nouns that could be described by the adjective on the green apple card. The judge then gets to determine which noun best fits with the adjective. Naturally, when you only have a certain amount of nouns in your hands, some funny combinations can come up. Perhaps the most hysterical one was with the green apple card "awkward" and the red apple card "love life" as Shannon put down the red apple card without knowing what it meant entirely. Needless to say, I almost fell out of my chair. Anyways, the night went much smoother than I thought it would, and I'm looking forward to visiting again.

Hey Crystal:

as of right now, we are still trying to work out the bugs of the blog entries and are keeping it simple by only having two bloggers. Thanks for the comment and the interest. See you around!
